Summary

“BROWN” is a film based on the true story of Panama Al Brown, the first Latin American lightweight boxing world champion. The movie portrays Brown’s struggles with discrimination and prejudice in the 1930s, including racism, homophobia, and xenophobia. Brown’s story is not just his own but represents the experiences of many African descendant boxers, including Muhammad Ali and Al Johnson.
The film shows how the same prejudices Brown faced in his time still exist today, perpetuated by political and economic conditions promoting hatred, discrimination, and intolerance towards minorities. Yet, despite these challenges, Brown fought for his civil rights and used boxing to raise his voice.
In Paris, Brown fell in love with Jacques Cousteau, a famous poet who tried to help him revive his boxing career in Europe. However, discrimination and intolerance thwarted their efforts. The film highlights the difficulties of being black, gay, and a sports champion, both in the past and today. It emphasizes the courage it takes to fight for one’s rights and how Brown’s story inspires Hispanics.
